Saskatchewan Public Inquiry into Police-Death-in-Custody Act
Saskatchewan's Bill 160 (Public Inquiry into Police-Death-in-Custody Act) is a Saskatchewan NDP-tabled opposition bill under leader Carla Beck calling for a standing public inquiry into deaths of persons in police custody in Saskatchewan. The federal Office of the Correctional Investigator and the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia have recommended such standing bodies for decades. Indigenous-justice advocates, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, and the Saskatchewan First Nations Family and Community Institute have called for the body for over 20 years. The Saskatchewan Party government opposes the bill, citing the existing Public Complaints Commission and the Independent Federal RCMP CRCC.
