An Act to amend the Old Age Security Act (Guaranteed Income Supplement)
An Act to amend the Old Age Security Act (Guaranteed Income Supplement). Royal assent February 25, 2022 (S.C. 2022, c. 1). Excludes Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), and related federal pandemic benefits from the calculation of GIS-eligible income for the July 2021 to June 2022 benefit year. Restores GIS payments to an estimated 88,000 low-income seniors whose 2020 pandemic-benefit income had reduced or eliminated their GIS in 2021, and provides one-time payments to compensate seniors whose GIS had already been clawed back. Sponsored by Kamal Khera as Minister of Seniors.
Status
Quick learn
Fixed an unintended consequence of pandemic benefits. CERB and CRB payments had pushed thousands of low-income seniors above the GIS income threshold, cutting them off the supplement. This bill excluded those benefits from the calculation and restored payments retroactively.
