An Act to amend the National Housing Strategy Act
Bill C-205 amends the National Housing Strategy Act (S.C. 2019, c. 29, s. 313) introduced in 2019. The original Act enshrined the right to adequate housing as a fundamental human right in federal statute and created the Office of the Federal Housing Advocate plus the National Housing Council. C-205 expands the Federal Housing Advocate's authority to investigate systemic-rights failings (the current Advocate Marie-Josee Houle published the May 2024 Encampments and Vulnerable People report identifying federal-rights violations), increases the National Housing Strategy budget targets above the original $82-billion 11-year commitment, and creates new accountability mechanisms tied to provincial housing-target progress.
