An Act to amend certain Acts and to make certain consequential amendments (firearms)
An Act to amend certain Acts and to make certain consequential amendments (firearms). Royal assent December 14, 2023 (S.C. 2023, c. 32). Largest federal gun-control package since the 1995 Firearms Act. Imposes a national handgun freeze (Order in Council October 21, 2022, codified in C-21) that bars new sales, imports, or transfers of handguns to most individuals. Expands the list of prohibited assault-style firearms by definition rather than make-and-model, funds a federal buyback program for previously restricted weapons, and creates new red-flag and yellow-flag provisions letting courts order seizure of firearms from individuals posing a risk. Federal parties remain split: Conservative Party of Canada has stated it would repeal both the freeze and buyback if elected.
