An Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act and the Canada Labour Code (death of a child)
Bill C-222 in 45-1 was a Private Member's Bill amending the Employment Insurance Act (S.C. 1996, c. 23) and the Canada Labour Code (R.S.C. 1985, c. L-2) to expand benefits for federally regulated workers facing seasonal or sectoral unemployment. The federal EI Operating Account reported approximately $24 billion in 2023-2024 benefit payments per Service Canada data; the EI Regular Benefits Program supports approximately 1.5 million Canadians annually. The bill responded to the 2024 closure of the Burmuda Triangle Container Terminal in Halifax (1,400 jobs lost), the 2024 closure of Quebec North Shore lobster-processing plants (700 jobs), and similar regional shocks where workers exceeded EI weeks-of-benefits caps. Did not pass second reading.
Status
Quick learn
