An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Judges Act (violence against an intimate partner)
Keira's Law. Royal assent April 27, 2023 (S.C. 2023, c. 4). Liberal private member's bill sponsored by Anju Dhillon (MP for Dorval-Lachine-LaSalle). Named for Keira Kagan, a four-year-old who died in 2020 during a court-ordered access visit with her father, who had a documented history of domestic violence. The bill makes intimate-partner violence and coercive control a Criminal Code consideration in the granting of a peace bond, and requires the Canadian Judicial Council to publish information on educational seminars for federally appointed judges on intimate-partner violence and coercive control. Passed unanimously in the Commons and Senate.
