An Act to continue VIA Rail Canada Inc. under the name VIA Rail Canada and to make consequential amendments to other Acts
Bill C-236 in 44-1 was a Liberal Private Member's Bill to continue VIA Rail Canada Inc. under the new name VIA Rail Canada Corporation as a Crown corporation, with an expanded mandate under the Canada Transportation Act (S.C. 1996, c. 10). Brought in coordination with the federal High-Frequency Rail (HFR) project announcement (announced July 2021 for the Quebec City-Toronto corridor, route-selection decision expected 2026, total project cost estimated $6-12 billion). The bill would have established VIA Rail Canada Corporation as a Crown corporation under Schedule III Part I of the Financial Administration Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. F-11) with binding annual public-reporting requirements. Did not pass third reading.
