An Act to amend the Criminal Code, to make related amendments to the Corrections and Conditional Release Act and to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
Bill C-240 is the Bloc Québécois's recurring Criminal Code amendment requiring federal judges to interpret the Code consistently with Quebec's distinct-society status when sentencing in Quebec. The Bloc has tabled a version in every Parliament since 2008. Parliament has formally recognized Quebec as a distinct society in motion form (Commons motion of November 27, 2006, sponsored by Stephen Harper), but never enshrined the recognition in statute. C-240 forces a periodic Commons vote on the question.
