An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code
Bill C-247 was a Liberal Private Member's Bill amending the Canada Labour Code (R.S.C. 1985, c. L-2) to extend bereavement leave and compassionate-care leave provisions for federally regulated workers. Currently the CLC provides up to 28 weeks of compassionate-care leave for terminally ill family members (originally introduced in Bill C-3 of 38-1, S.C. 2004, c. 22). The bill would have expanded the eligibility to chosen-family members (recognized in section 41 of the CLC since 2021), increased the maximum leave to 36 weeks, and made the leave a federal-jurisdiction protected right rather than subject to provincial-jurisdiction employment standards in similar relationships. Did not pass second reading.
