An Act to amend the Telecommunications Act (suicide prevention)
Bill C-269 in 44-1 was a Liberal Private Member's Bill amending the Telecommunications Act (S.C. 1993, c. 38) to require federal-regulated telecommunications service providers (mobile carriers, internet service providers) to display suicide-prevention crisis-line information on their websites and customer-facing communications. Brought as part of the federal push toward the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline (launched November 30, 2023 nationally, fully funded by the federal government). Currently the CRTC's Wireless Code of Conduct does not require carriers to display crisis-line information. The bill would have aligned with the US 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline disclosure requirements under the Wireless Bureau-Public Safety regulations. Did not pass third reading.
