An Act respecting the development of a national employment strategy for persons with disabilities
Bill C-272 was a Liberal Private Member's Bill establishing a national strategy on employment for persons with disabilities. Approximately 27 percent of Canadians (8 million per Statistics Canada 2022 Canadian Survey on Disability) report having a disability; their employment rate is approximately 59 percent versus 80 percent for non-disabled working-age Canadians. The bill called for federal-provincial coordination on employment quotas, workplace-accommodation tax credits under the Accessible Canada Act (S.C. 2019, c. 10), and stronger Employment Equity Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. 23, 2nd Supp.) enforcement on federally regulated employers. The 2024 federal budget included parts of the proposal in the Workplace Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Strategy.
