An Act to amend the Criminal Code (detention in custody)
Bill C-274 was a Conservative Private Member's Bill amending the Criminal Code (R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46) section 515 justification for pre-trial detention in custody. Brought after the December 2022 killing of OPP Constable Greg Pierzchala by an offender on bail near Hagersville, Ontario, prompted joint federal-provincial-territorial pressure for bail reform. The bill was overtaken by the government's own Bill C-48 (Bail Reform Act, S.C. 2023, c. 30, royal assent December 5, 2023, in force January 4, 2024) which made reverse-onus on bail apply to certain repeat violent and weapons offences. C-274 itself did not pass third reading.
