An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management)
Bill C-282 amends the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. E-22) to require the Minister of International Trade to refuse to commit Canada to any new trade agreement that would reduce protections under Canada's supply-managed sectors (dairy, poultry, and eggs). Sponsored by Bloc Québécois MP Luc Thériault (Montcalm). Passed Commons June 21, 2023 with all-party support except some Conservatives. The Senate amended the bill to narrow its scope; the Commons rejected the Senate amendments. Royal assent June 13, 2024 in its original form (S.C. 2024, c. 9). The Dairy Farmers of Canada called it the most significant supply-management protection statute since the 1972 federal-provincial Canadian Dairy Commission framework.
