An Act respecting pandemic prevention and preparedness
Bill C-293 was a Liberal Private Member's Bill respecting pandemic prevention and preparedness, sponsored by then-Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (Beaches-East York). The bill called for a federal Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness Plan, the establishment of an Office of Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness, federal coordination on One Health surveillance (animal-human-environment-health), and federal funding for vaccine-manufacturing capacity at home. Brought as a long-term response to the COVID-19 pandemic (which killed approximately 60,000 Canadians per Public Health Agency of Canada cumulative data 2020-2024) and to the 2023 Auditor General's Report on Federal Pandemic Preparedness which found gaps in federal coordination. Did not pass third reading.
