National Indigenous Teachers Day Act
Bill C-338 designates September 30 as National Indigenous Teachers Day, coinciding with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (the federal statutory holiday since 2021 commemorating the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the residential-school survivors). Approximately 12,800 Indigenous educators currently teach in K-12 systems across Canada per the Assembly of First Nations data, but Indigenous educators represent less than 3 percent of the Canadian teaching workforce despite Indigenous students representing approximately 8 percent of the K-12 student population. The bill aims to address the systemic underrepresentation through public-awareness and recruitment-incentive frameworks. Did not pass third reading.
