An Act to establish the Office of the Ombud for the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces, to make related amendments to the Contraventions Act and to make consequential amendments to certain Acts
Bill C-362 (44-1) was an NDP Private Member's Bill from Lindsay Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) to make the Ombud for the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces a body set out in law, with its powers and duties spelled out in statute. The military ombudsman currently exists only by ministerial order, which critics say leaves it dependent on the department it is meant to scrutinize. Putting the office on a statutory footing was a recommendation of recent reviews of the military, including Justice Louise Arbour's 2022 report on sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces. It did not pass second reading.
