An Act to give effect to the self-government treaty recognizing the Whitecap Dakota Nation / Wapaha Ska Dakota Oyate. Royal assent May 11, 2023 (S.C. 2023, c. 8). Implements in federal law the Whitecap Dakota Nation Self-Government Treaty signed October 2023 (negotiated under the federal Recognition of Indigenous Rights and Self-Determination process). Establishes the Whitecap Dakota Nation Government with jurisdiction over the nation's land base, citizenship, and a defined set of governance matters previously under federal Indian Act authority. Whitecap Dakota becomes one of the few Treaty 4 successor nations to negotiate a modern self-government treaty. Sponsored by Marc Miller as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.
