An Act respecting the recognition of the Haida Nation and the Council of the Haida Nation
An Act respecting the recognition of the Haida Nation and the Council of the Haida Nation. Royal assent June 20, 2024 (S.C. 2024, c. 12). Federally recognizes the Haida Nation as the Indigenous holder of Aboriginal rights and title to Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands), and recognizes the Council of the Haida Nation as the governing body. Companion to British Columbia's 2024 Haida Nation Recognition Act, which similarly recognizes Haida title at the provincial level. Together the two laws are the most extensive legislative recognition of Aboriginal title in Canadian history, accomplished without resort to court ruling. Sponsored by Gary Anandasangaree as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.
