An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying)
Bill S-231 is the Senate companion to Commons Bill C-218, extending the indefinite delay on the part of Canada's medical-assistance-in-dying (MAID) law that would let people whose only underlying condition is mental illness qualify. The original 2021 Bill C-7 (44-1, R.S.C. 2021, c. 2) was set to extend eligibility on March 17, 2023. Bill C-39 (44-1) delayed the extension to March 17, 2024. Bill C-62 (44-1) delayed it again to March 17, 2027 after the Special Joint Committee on MAID reported that the health system was not ready. S-231 makes the delay indefinite pending further parliamentary review.
