An Act respecting a Cities and Municipalities Day
Bill S-237 was a Senate Private Member's Bill establishing a National Cities and Municipalities Day to recognize the role of Canadian municipal governments in delivering essential public services. Canada has approximately 3,650 municipalities representing roughly 76 percent of the Canadian population per Statistics Canada. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) supported the proposed designation. The bill complements the existing Local Government Awareness Week (third week of November) and the May First Friday Mayors Day in some provinces. Did not pass third reading.
