An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act (protecting against discrimination based on political belief)
Bill S-257 was a Senate Private Member's Bill amending the Canadian Human Rights Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. H-6) to add political belief or activity as a protected ground under section 3 of the Act, the Senate companion to 44-1 Bill C-257 (Bloc Quebecois PMB on the same topic). Currently the Act prohibits federal-jurisdiction discrimination on 13 grounds (race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability, conviction for which a pardon has been granted). Several provincial Human Rights Codes (Newfoundland, Quebec, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario partially) already prohibit political-belief discrimination. Did not pass third reading.
