An Act respecting National Diffuse Midline Glioma Awareness Day
Bill S-260 designates May 17 as National Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG) Awareness Day, an extension of the awareness framework that also covers Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG, S-244 of 45-1). DMG and DIPG are aggressive paediatric brain-stem tumors with no current cure; the median age at diagnosis is 6 to 9 years and median survival is 9 to 12 months from diagnosis. Approximately 25 to 35 Canadian children are diagnosed with DMG/DIPG annually per the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada. The awareness day aims to spur research funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Childhood Cancer Canada coalition. Did not pass third reading; reintroduced in modified form as S-244 of 45-1.
