An Act respecting a framework to strengthen Canada–Taiwan relations
Bill S-277 was a Senate Private Member's Bill respecting a framework to strengthen Canada-Taiwan relations (44-1 Senate companion to Bill C-343 of 44-1). The bill called for federal-government coordination on non-diplomatic relations with Taiwan including trade, investment, education, and tourism, while maintaining Canada's One China policy in place since the 1970 Pierre Trudeau diplomatic recognition. The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (the de facto embassy operating since 1986) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada handle current relations. The bill responded to growing Taiwan Strait tensions following Nancy Pelosi's August 2022 Taipei visit and the 2024 Taiwan election. Did not pass third reading.
