An Act to establish a National Framework on Heart Failure
Bill S-284 establishes a National Framework on Heart Failure, the most common cause of hospitalization for Canadians over 65. The Canadian Cardiovascular Society estimates approximately 750,000 Canadians live with heart failure, with 100,000 new diagnoses annually; one-year mortality after first hospitalization for heart failure remains roughly 22 percent. The framework would coordinate federal-provincial-territorial action on early-detection screening, evidence-based treatment standards, and access to newer medications including SGLT2 inhibitors. Sponsored in the Senate to ensure non-partisan delivery; companion to Heart and Stroke Foundation advocacy since 2018.
