An Act respecting National Immigration Month
Bill S-286 designates April as National Immigration Month nationally. Approximately 23 percent of the Canadian population is foreign-born per the 2021 Statistics Canada census (8.3 million immigrants, the highest in G7 by share), with annual permanent-residence intake at approximately 485,000 in 2024 under the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan. The federal Liberal government's 2024-2026 plan was reduced to 395,000 annually for 2025-2027 by the Carney Liberal government. The bill aimed to formally recognize the contributions of immigrants to Canadian society through a coordinated awareness month. Companion to multiple previous PMBs since 2018 and provincial Immigration Month proclamations in Ontario (since 2014), Quebec, and Manitoba. Did not pass third reading.
