An Act to amend the Judges Act
Bill S-3 was a government bill amending the Judges Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. J-1) to address salaries, allowances, and benefits for federally appointed judges (Supreme Court of Canada justices, Federal Court of Canada and Federal Court of Appeal judges, Court Martial Appeal Court judges, Tax Court of Canada judges, and provincial superior-court judges). The bill implemented recommendations of the Quadrennial Commission on Judges' Compensation and Benefits (the 2020 Final Report, chaired by Margaret Bloodworth) which had recommended a salary increase from approximately $336,400 to $356,600 effective April 2024. The Judges Act framework dates to 1985, codifying constitutional judicial-independence requirements from the Constitution Act, 1867 section 100.
