Mark Carney is the 24th Prime Minister of Canada (sworn in March 14, 2025) and Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (since March 9, 2025). MP for Nepean (Ontario), first elected at the April 28, 2025 general election. Carney was Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Before becoming Liberal leader he served as the UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance. Won a Liberal minority at the April 28, 2025 election (169 of 343 seats). Secured a federal majority government on April 13, 2026 after Liberal byelection wins in Toronto University-Rosedale, Toronto Scarborough Southwest, and Quebec Terrebonne, combined with five floor crossings from other parties between November 2025 and March 2026, bringing the Liberal caucus to 174 seats. First federal Liberal majority since 2019. Major announcements include the National Electricity Strategy and the Alberta energy collaboration agreement with Premier Danielle Smith (both May 15, 2026), and the AI for All Strategy with $2.3 billion in funding announced June 4, 2026, targeting 250,000 AI-related jobs by 2031 and a rise in Canadian AI adoption from 12 percent to 60 percent by 2034. Signature legislative agenda includes Bill C-5 (One Canadian Economy Act, royal assent June 26, 2025), Bill C-4 (Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act, repealed federal consumer carbon tax in 2025), and Bill C-12 (Strengthening Canada's Immigration System and Borders Act, royal assent March 26, 2026).
