Avi Lewis is the Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada (since March 29, 2026, the 9th NDP leader). Elected at the NDP leadership convention in Winnipeg on March 29, 2026 after a seven-month leadership race (September 2025 to March 2026) following Jagmeet Singh's resignation. The race included Rob Ashton, Tanille Johnston, Heather McPherson, and Tony McQuail. Before politics he was a CBC television journalist, host of CBC Newsworld's CounterSpin (1998-2001), Al Jazeera English correspondent, and producer of the documentary The Take (2004) and the Naomi Klein film This Changes Everything (2015). Ran for the NDP in the 2021 federal election in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, finishing second to Liberal Patrick Weiler. Married to journalist and author Naomi Klein. Son of Stephen Lewis (former Ontario NDP leader, UN Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa) and grandson of David Lewis (former federal NDP leader 1971-1975). The NDP currently holds 6 seats in the House of Commons after Lori Idlout crossed to the Liberals, down from the 7-seat result at the April 28, 2025 election.
