Francois Legault served as the 32nd Premier of Quebec from October 18, 2018 until April 15, 2026, when Christine Frechette was sworn in after winning the Coalition Avenir Quebec leadership race. Founder and Leader of the CAQ from 2011 until April 12, 2026. Sat in the National Assembly for L'Assomption. Won two consecutive majority governments (2018 and 2022) for the CAQ. Before founding the CAQ, he was a Parti Quebecois MNA (1998-2009) and held cabinet positions including Minister of Education and Minister of Health. Announced his intention to step down in January 2026 with the CAQ slumping in polls. His government was responsible for Bill 21 (state secularism using s. 33 notwithstanding clause, R.S.Q. 2019 c. 12) and Bill 96 (Charter of the French Language strengthening, R.S.Q. 2022 c. 14, also using s. 33).
