R.J. Simpson (Richard Robert Simpson) is the 15th Premier of the Northwest Territories (since December 7, 2023). The NWT operates under consensus government (no political parties); the Premier is chosen by the Legislative Assembly from among its 19 members. Simpson represents Hay River North. Before becoming Premier he was Minister of Justice and Minister of Education, Culture and Employment under Caroline Cochrane. His Cabinet has focused on the wildfire recovery from the record 2023 fire season and Indigenous housing.
