Olivia Chow is the 66th Mayor of Toronto (since July 12, 2023). Born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada in 1970. Before becoming mayor she served as Toronto City Councillor for Downtown ward Trinity-Spadina (1991-2005) and federal NDP MP for Trinity-Spadina (2006-2014). Wife of the late federal NDP leader Jack Layton. Won the June 26, 2023 mayoral by-election with 37 percent of the vote after John Tory resigned over an inappropriate workplace relationship. As Mayor she has overseen the Toronto Housing Accelerator Fund deal with Ottawa, the 9.5 percent property-tax increase of 2024, and the new long-term funding deal with the Ford government on the Gardiner and DVP.
