Jyoti Gondek is the 37th Mayor of Calgary (since October 25, 2021). Born in London, England, of Punjabi heritage, and raised in Manitoba and Calgary. Before becoming mayor she served as a Calgary city councillor for Ward 3 (2017-2021) and held a doctorate in sociology, working as a researcher and instructor at the University of Calgary. Defeated Jeromy Farkas and 25 other candidates in the October 2021 mayoral race. The first woman elected mayor of Calgary and the first racialized person to hold the office. As Mayor she declared a climate emergency in November 2021 and oversaw the controversial Green Line LRT scope-reduction dispute with the Smith UCP government in 2024.
