Liberal MP for Vancouver Centre since 1993, when she famously defeated sitting Prime Minister Kim Campbell in her own riding. She is the longest-serving female member of Parliament in Canadian history. A physician and former president of the British Columbia Medical Association before politics, she served as Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women under Jean Chretien and has been a long-standing advocate on women's health, LGBTQ rights, and multiculturalism.
