Sol Mamakwa is NDP MPP for Kiiwetinoong, first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, representing the largest geographic riding in Ontario which covers most of the province's far north. A member of Kingfisher Lake First Nation and a fluent Anishininiimowin (Oji-Cree) speaker. The first elected official in the history of the Ontario Legislature permitted to address the House in an Indigenous language (April 25, 2023, when the Legislative Assembly amended its procedural rules to allow Indigenous-language speeches with prior notice and translation). Has led NDP work on the boil-water advisories crisis, child welfare for Indigenous youth, and the Ontario Provincial Police treatment of First Nations communities.
