Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act
Ontario's Bill 209 (Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act) codifies in statute the Ontario PC government's 2024 ministerial directive restricting cellphone use in K-12 classrooms (in effect for the September 2024 school year, with phones to be powered off and stored during instructional time at all 4,800 publicly funded Ontario schools serving roughly 2 million students). Adds new reporting requirements on student-supports staffing levels (mental-health counsellors, child-and-youth workers, language pathologists), and creates a publicly accessible Education Accountability Dashboard for parents to track school-level outcomes. Effective for the 2024-2025 school year.
