An Act to amend the Criminal Code
Bill C-225 (45-1) is a Conservative Private Member's Bill from Frank Caputo to amend the Criminal Code around intimate-partner violence. It would create a new first-degree-murder category for killing an intimate partner in the context of a pattern of coercive or controlling behaviour, require courts to consider a life sentence for related manslaughter, add new offences where violence is used or threatened against an intimate partner, and extend how long police can hold seized items from three months to 180 days. It reflects a growing push to write coercive control into Canadian criminal law.
