An Act to prohibit fur farming
Bill C-247 was a Private Member's Bill sponsored by Liberal MP Lisa Hepfner (Hamilton Mountain) to prohibit fur farming in Canada and phase out existing fur-farming operations over five years. Canada has roughly 80 active fur farms (mostly mink and fox) in British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The 2021 SARS-CoV-2 mink-farm outbreaks in British Columbia drove the bill's introduction. Did not pass second reading after Quebec MPs raised concerns about the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean fur-farm industry. The Fur Institute of Canada and the Fur Council opposed; Humane Society International Canada supported.
