Independent (Nunavut)
Indépendant (Nunavut)
Nunavut also operates a consensus-government system without political parties, parallel to the Northwest Territories model. Members of the Legislative Assembly (22 seats since 2013, one per riding) run as independents, then meet to elect a Premier and Cabinet from their own number. The consensus model reflects the traditional decision-making practices of Inuit communities, in which decisions are reached through extended discussion rather than majority vote against a defeated minority. P.J. Akeeagok has been Premier since November 19, 2021, having previously been President of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association from 2014 to 2021. Major files for the Akeeagok government: housing, mental health, Inuit language revitalization, and the Nunavut Devolution Agreement transferring jurisdiction over Crown lands and resources from Ottawa to Nunavut.
