Carbon Tax Repeal Act
New Brunswick's Bill 2 (Carbon Tax Repeal Act) is the Holt Liberal government's 2024 statute responding to the federal Carney Liberal government's elimination of the consumer-fuel-charge component of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act (S.C. 2018, c. 12, s. 186) in 2025. The Act removes the provincial accommodation framework that had implemented the federal backstop in NB and provides for adjustments to the NB Energy and Utilities Board rate-setting framework. NB had previously joined Alberta and Saskatchewan in challenging the federal carbon-pricing-backstop in court; the SCC upheld the GHGPPA in Reference re Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act (2021 SCC 11) by 6-3.
