An Act respecting the establishment and award of a Living Donor Recognition Medal
Bill C-234 creates a federal Living Donor Recognition Medal awarded to Canadians who donate a kidney, a liver lobe, lung tissue, or bone marrow as living donors. Canada had 583 living kidney donors in 2023 (Canadian Institute for Health Information data), the largest category of living donation, alongside roughly 75 living liver-lobe donors per year. The medal is honorific only and does not change transplant-system funding, eligibility under the Canadian Blood Services Organ Donation and Transplantation Collaborative, or post-donation income protection (a long-standing donor-advocacy ask still unaddressed federally).
